- tty1-tty12 all run login; the image has only root. /dev/tty7..12 could not be written (cdev.c knew minors 10-16 only), which sent their jobs into a restart storm that took the supervisor down; fixed, and stat reports them as Linux's tty7..12. - Erasing text at a prompt did nothing: erase_one sent a bare backspace, which only moves; it and the echo path now send back-blank-back through vt_feed. - A white cursor block was left at the end of every line of a verbose boot: a line feed at the bottom scrolls the pixels, cursor included, and the cursor was erased after the scroll. It comes off first now. A blank cell is also marked dirty, which it was not. - ldlsd died with a general protection fault on real hardware in its variadic log function: Linux module code calls with an 8-byte-aligned stack and an unset %al, and the prologue's movaps faults. LDLS guest code is built with -mstackrealign. - make iso took over a minute for any change, because staging r8169 rewrote the same files and every mtime moved; it now replaces files only if their contents differ (about 10 s). - The loader's splash is redrawn in the boot manager's style, and the boot manager shows its cursor whenever a pointer device exists. - xf86-input-libinput is out of the image again: with it Xorg took both keyboard and pointer from libinput and, on the user's laptop, neither worked. UEFI loader
The loader. This directory once existed only so the BIOS path could be moved
into boot/bios/ without pretending the split was hypothetical; it is now the
only path there is.
See ../README.md for the hand-off contract a loader has to satisfy. The
short version: the kernel wants long mode with paging on, its ELF segments
placed, a 24-byte-entry E820-shaped memory map, and framebuffer geometry — and
it does not care which firmware produced them.
What this will need, in rough order:
- A PE/COFF target. clang can emit one directly
(
--target=x86_64-unknown-windows -fuse-ld=lld-link), so no new toolchain: the same LLVM install already builds every other target here. - The handful of UEFI structures actually used — the system table, boot
services,
LOADED_IMAGE,SIMPLE_FILE_SYSTEM,GRAPHICS_OUTPUT. Written from the specification rather than by importing gnu-efi or EDK II, which is both a licence question and a large dependency for something this small. GetMemoryMaptranslated into the same 24-byte entriese820.calready parses. Not a second format for the kernel to learn.ExitBootServicesbefore touching the memory it described.- Graphics Output Protocol for the framebuffer, filling the same
VBE_INFO_ADDRstructure the kernel reads.
The image goes at EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI on a FAT ESP, which also means the
ISO carries a single El Torito EFI entry.
The boot manager
F8 (or o on a serial line) opens a Niveus-styled boot manager, drawn by
../common/ui.c in Instrument Sans (include/gfx/nvfont.h, regenerate with
make nvfont). It takes keyboard and pointer, lists other systems it finds on
the disks and can chain-load them, and has working Firmware Setup, Restart and
Shut Down. See docs/architecture/boot.md.
